During tonight’s Company meeting, members of the Alpha Fire Co. took a moment to reflect on the service of two active members of the Fire Company who were untimely taken from us, Jack Zook and Robert Donald. Both of these men were active contributing members of the company serving as officers and simply responding to calls. Tonight a bench in front of the Main station was dedicated to the memory of Jack Zook and a commemorative plaque was placed in the kitchen of the Main station in the memory of Robert Donald.
Jack Zook was elected to membership on March 17th, 1970. In 1983 he served as a representative to the Central District Firefighters Association. From 1983 through 1985 and again in 2005 and 2011 Jack served as a Trustee of the Firemen’s Relief Association of State College. From 1984 through 1986 he was a Captain and from 1986 through 1994 Jack was the Financial Secretary of the Company. From 1995 through 1998 and 2003 he was elected a Trustee of the Fire Company. In June of 2003 he resigned as a trustee. Jack later joined the Special Fire Police while maintaining driver status in the Company.
In 2004, 2006 and 2007 Jack was appointed Second Sergeant of the Fire Police and then from 2008 through 2011 he was First Sergeant.
Jack had a ready wit and was the first to tease and joke with any member. He loved the Company and his fellow firefighters and one always knew that Jack’s interest was that of the Fire Company. Unfortunately, he died unexpectedly on October 16th, 2011.
Bob Donald was elected to the Company on February 4th, 2003 and immediately became a member of the Special Fire Police. He was quickly elected to the Vice President of the Fire Police in 2004. From 2006 through 2010 Bob was the Secretary of the Fire Company and also served as Financial Secretary in 2010. From 2006 through 2010, Bob was elected as the Trustee of the Firemen’s Relief Association where he assumed the duties of “purchasing agent” for Relief. Bob Donald also died unexpectedly on December 15, 2010.
No one can doubt the dedication and care these men brought to the Fire Company and we remember them as friends, not just co-workers. May your souls rest in peace.
In memory of Jack, his wife Elena Deluca and family have dedicated a bench for firefighters to use when sitting out front. The bench is memorialized by a plaque and will provide memories of Jack for all of us when we see it.
Bob Donald liked coffee and was instrumental in maintaining the supply of coffee and other vending supplies for the kitchen. Whether we just needed a cup to get started in the morning or to brighten us up after a difficult fire, the coffee was there. The Fire Company has prepared a plaque dedicating coffee supply and preparation area of the kitchen as Bob’s Coffee Shop. Every time we have a cup of coffee we can remember Bob’s dedication to the company and its members.
Our special thanks to Jack and Bob’s families for sharing them with use these years. Their service was valued and through these memorials will not be forgotten.
