On June 24, 2012, at approximately 10:30 PM, the Alpha Fire Company was alerted for a reported building fire in the 2300 Block of Bristol Ave. in Ferguson Township. The initial call reported a room and contents fire. Asst. Safety Officer Bittner arrived within minutes and reported a well involved fire on two floors. Heavy fire conditions were observed in the garage and north porch area. A request was made to add an additional Engine and Truck Company for mutual aid. Engine 510 and Quint 527 arrived and made an interior attack utilizing two hand-lines on both the first and second floor. Truck 517 arrived and began truck operations to include search and rescue and vertical ventilation. During this time Asst. Chief Dale arrived and assumed the command.
Crews continued to attack the fire, rotating firefighters for the next hour. Due to deteriorating conditions and fire in multiple void spaces, Command ordered an evacuation of the structure for firefighter safety and to re-evaluate the situation. During the evacuation, initial reports indicated a firefighter was possibly trapped and a Mayday was announced on the fire-ground. As the Rapid Intervention Team began to enter the structure the reported missing firefighter was found and the Mayday was cancelled. The company then moved to master stream operations from Truck 517 and put out the bulk of the fire so crews could enter the structure and extinguish the fire.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Ferguson Township Police and the Centre Region Fire Marshal. Crews operated on scene for approximately four hours. Centre Lifelink EMS provided Rehab Services and an Advanced Life Support stand-by crew during the incident. Special thanks to the Undine Fire Company of Bellefonte and the Boalsburg Fire Company for mutual aid at the scene, and the Pleasant Gap Fire Company for transferring to the Centre Region to cover additional calls.
