Written by Mike Vanadia & John Stephansky

April 26-27, 2008

This weekend, the engine and truck companies traveled to the Centre County Training site to conduct the final modules and evaluations for the in-house PERT program.  Crews spent a majority of the day on Saturday doing static evolutions to hone and finalize engine and truck skills. The engine set up multiple stations that included pre-connected hose line deployment, hydrant and break operations, as well as LDH and master stream operations.

McCormick Ave. Vehicle Fire

Around 2:30PM Company 5 was dispatched to McCormick Avenue for a working vehicle fire.  Engine 510 immediately responded to the scene.  Assistant Chief 504 (Kuchmay) arrived on scene first and confirmed a vehicle fire with fire in the engine compartment.  510 arrived directly after the chief and began going to work.  Two members began to stretch the trash line off the front bumper and two other members began to access the fire.  Once the crew had all of their protective equipment in place they began to put a knock on the fire.  Rescue 518 then arrived on the scene but since most of the fire was already out, their crew was released from the scene.  The engine crew continued to hit hot spots and was released from the scene after operating for approximately twenty minutes.  Alpha Fire Police maintained scene control.  img_8553

Fraser St "Bomb" Scare
Written by Jason Troup
April 18, 2008

Shortly after 12PM the Alpha Fire Co. and the Penn State HazMat were dispatched to stand-by in their stations for the State College Police Department.  Assistant Chief DeArmitt was requested to the scene, 131 S. Fraser St.  Upon his arrival he requested Rescue 518 to the scene.  State College Police were actively investigating a suspicious package in the area of the Fraser St. parking garage, the package appeared to be a bomb and was being treated as such.

The Pennsylvania State Police Hazardous Device Team was requested from Hershey and upon their arrival they investigated and destroyed the package.  It was later determined that the package posed no threat to the community and was actually a school project that a student had forgotten and left behind.

The area around the parking garage was evacuated and closed for approximately 3 hours.
