I-99 MVA

At approximately 5:45 AM the Alpha Fire Co. was dispatched to I-99 in Patton Township in the area of Exit 73 for a motor vehicle accident with injuries. Units responding were advised of an SUV roll over with a person outside of the vehicle. Fire Director S. Bair (5500) arrived on scene first to find a single patient that had self extricated themselves and an SUV off the roadway. Engine 510 and Rescue 518 were utilized to provide traffic control in the area due to the large amount of debris that was on the roadway.

The patient was transported to Mount Nittany Medical Center by Centre LifeLink EMS.

Units were on scene for approximately 1 hour.

MVA in College Heights Section of the Borough

Sunday May 29th 2011: At approximately 3:30 pm today Company 5 was dispatched for a motor vehicle accident with rollover and entrapment in the College Heights section of State College Borough. Within minutes Rescue Squad 518 and Engine Rescue 514 went enroute with 8 volunteers. Rescue Squad arrived on scene minutes later and found 1 vehicle on its side confirming entrapment. The squad went to work stabilizing the vehicle and initiating patient access. After stabilization was complete, crews removed the patient through a rear hatch on the vehicle and transferred the patient to awaiting EMS. Crews cleaned up and went available.

First Due Attic Fire: 120 Orchard Road, College Township

Friday May 27th 2011: At 03:37 hours Company 5 was dispatched for a dwelling fire with fire in the attic.  The overnight standby crews for Engine 510 and Tower 516 responded immediately with 10 volunteers, followed by Engine 514, Quint 527, Tower 517 and Rescue Squad 518 with 12 volunteers.  Tower 516 arrived first to find smoke showing from the roofline and attic in a one story single family dwelling and requested the working fire dispatch.  Engine 510 secured their own water supply and stretched a 1 ¾ hand line into the structure where they found moderate fire conditions while Truck 516 threw multiple ladders, completed a primary search, cracked the roof and found the seat of the fire holding it in check for the engine company with a can.  Other crews arrived and assisted with ventilation, salvage and overhaul.  All crews went ready and available at 5:53 hours.  The cause of the fire was determined to be from a lightning strike.

Tri-Axle Wreaks Havoc at the Nittany Mall

Monday May 23rd 2011: Today at approximately 1:36 pm Boalsburg Chief 304 notified county of a tri-axle into a light pole with entrapment and fire in the Nittany Mall parking lot. Engine 510 went on the road within 2 minutes after 304’s initial report. Upon arriving on scene the engine crew noticed multiple damaged vehicles in the mall parking lot and numerous large tree limbs on the road and in the parking lot with one tri-axle into a parking lot light pole. The tri-axle went off the road into the parking lot, hit one car and threw into another car and also took out several tree limbs; it then went back onto the Benner Pike for a short distance and went back into the parking lot narrowly missing a telephone poll and came to a final rest when it hit a light poll in the parking lot.

Kitchen Fire in the 532 Box, College Township

Sunday May 8th 2011: Company 5 was dispatched at 18:29 for a dwelling fire with reports of smoke coming from the windows and roof. State College PD arrived on scene and reported heavy smoke from the second floor of a townhouse. After the report from PD, 501 (Kuchmay) added Engine 810 from Pleasant Gap and Rescue 318 from Boalsburg.  540 (S. Clouser) arrived on scene and confirmed PDs report. Engine 510 went on the road with 5 volunteers within 2 minutes. Engine 510 arrived on scene with 5 minutes, secured its own water supply and crews stretched a line to the interior. Quint 527 arrived shortly after and threw multiple ground ladders and assisted the engine crew. Truck 517 assisted in opening up and ventilation. Crews went back into service in under 1 hour.
