Smoke Causes Evacuation of Downtown Hotel

Shortly before 5:00 AM the company was dispatched for a building fire at 240 S. Pugh St. in the Borough of State College.  Callers from the facility were advising of a smoke condition on the 6th floor.  State College Police arrived on scene at the Days Inn and advised of smoke condition on the 6th floor with no signs of heat or fire.  Assistant Chief N. Kuchmay (502) arrived on scene and assumed Pugh St. command.

Command and PD found the cause to be a burned up motor on the roof of structure and command held the box to Engine 514 and Truck 517.  Crews investigated the area around the motor checking for extension and found nothing.  Crews then assisted with ventilation of the structure.

I-99 Vehicle Fire

Late tonight the Alpha's were alerted to I-99 Southbound on the Waddle Rd. off ramp for a working vehicle fire.  Centre County 911 advised responding units of multiple calls for a pick-up truck on fire.  Assistant Chief S. Kauffman (504) arrived first and confirmed a fully involved truch and assumed command.

Rescue 518 and Engine 514 arrived on scene and crews stretched the 1 3/4" trash line from the engine to extinguish the fire.

The vehicle was a total loss and the off ramp was closed to traffic during the incident.

Mutual Aid to Harris Township

Shortly before 1:00 AM the company was dispatched to assist Boalsburg Fire Company to 1551 Linden Hall Rd. in Harris Township for a working barn fire.  Units responding were advised of multiple calls reporting a working fire, given this information Chief 300 requested 3 additional tankers be added to the box.  Safety Officer 340 arrived on scene first and advised of a working fire in a large implement shed.  Units responding from the Alpha's included Engine 514, Truck 516, Tanker 519, and Tanker 520.  All Alpha apparatus were available by 3:30 AM.
 
2 Vehicle Accidents for the Day

This afternoon and evening the Alpha Fire Company was dispatched for vehicle accidents with injuries.  The first accident occurred in Ferguson Township at the intersection of W College Ave and Shingletown Rd at approximately 2:15 PM.  Dispatch reported a car versus motorcycle with one person injured.  Engine 514 responded on the call.  Chief Kauffman (504) arrived on scene and reported minor injuries and no need for the fire department and placed the box available.

Shortly before 7:00 PM the company was alerted for a vehicle accident with unknown injuries on I-99 at Exit 68 in Patton Township.  Rescue 518, Engine 514, and Port Matilda Rescue 1518 responded on the call.  Engine 514 arrived on scene first to find one vehicle in the median with Pennsylvania State Police already on scene.  PSP advised of no injuries and no need for the fire department.  Upon confirming that this was the only accident in the area the box was placed available.

 
Lemont House Fire

At approximatley 0600 hrs, the company was dispatched for a building fire at 921 Pike St in Lemont. Chief J. Martin (503) arrived at the address and confirmed a working fire with smoking showing from the eves. Chief Kuchmay (502) immediately requested an extra Engine and Truck on the box. Chief Clouser (500) arrived and requested a second alarm.  Chief Kuchmay (502) and Engine 510 arrived simultaneously and immediately went to work.  Fire conditions were discovered on the second floor in a business. A quick attack by the Engine crew and coordinated ventialtion efforts by the Truck Co  held the fire in place and a quick knock down occcurred. Extensive salvage and overhaul was needed for the incident. To note, the building is the Lemont House. This is a historic building having connections with the Underground Railroad. The fire is currently under investigation by the Centre Region Fire Marshal Office.

Truck 216 and Engine 111 from Bellefonte Fire Department transferred to Station 5 during the incident.
