While responding, units were advised of an active leak with at least
one patient. The leak happened when an employee was changing the
cylinders and the valve, which was not on properly, was turned on. The
Penn State Haz-Mat Team (Co. 20) arrived on scene, donned their
protective equipment, entered the hot zone and terminated the leak by
closing all valves on the chlorine cylinders. When the entry team
exited a light decontamination was conducted. The incident was placed
under control at 14:23 hrs. The haz-mat team remained on scene to
monitor the levels within the affected room.
Three people were affected
by the chlorine and transported to the Mount Nittany Medical center.
Chief 500 (S. Clouser) had the command.
Responding units included
Engines 512, 514, and 310, Truck 217, Rescue 518, Haz-Mat 2029, Utility
522, Fire Police 536, EMA 8000, Penn State EMS and Centre LifeLink EMS.
