At 12:47 Units from Station 5 were dispatched to assist Company 3 with a wildfire at the base of Tussey Mountian near Bear Medows Road.  This fire was quickly upgraded to a second and then third alarm wild fire

The second alarm added Rescue 518 and Tanker 519 to the box. The third alarm added Tanker 520 and Engine 510.  The Utility was also placed in service to help move manpower and equipment.  In addition to 510, 518, 519, 520 and 522 the Alpha Fire Company provided a large contingency of manpower to help fight the fire and Fire Police to assist in traffic and crowd control.

The fire was believed to have started near the 200 Block of Treaster Kettle Road in Harris Township by a downed power line.  The fire quickly spread due to the low relative humidity and dry leaf cover on the forest floor.  At times flames were reported as tall as 80 to 100 feet.  An estimated 437 acres were burned.

To help contain the fire companies from all of Centre County were called as well as companies from Huntington, Blair, Mifflin, and Lycoming Counties.  The PA DCNR Bureau of Forestry also provided support with manpower, and equipment including a helicopter, a fixed wing air plane and multiples dozers.

Both wet and dry lines were created using hand tools and dozers and supplemented with water from the helicopter and retardant from the fixed wing air craft.  Spot fire were quickly found and extinguished with the aid of air reconnaissance.

At 00.09hrs Tuesday morning the fire was completely contained and control was announced by the Command.  At 02.03hrs all manpower was off the mountain.  Crews are now back on scene to monitor conditions and extinguish any remaining hot spots.
