| At approximately 3:00 PM, the Alpha Fire Co. was dispatched to the Hotel State
College for the report of a building fire. While enroute, Chief K. Yocum (504) was
notified by the county that SCPD was on scene with smoke showing from the wall.
Engin 510 was the first unit to arrive and confirmed smoke and fire in the
floor. The fire was located on the second floor in the kitchen area. |

Crews from the engine and the truck made quick work of the fire, holding it
to a small portion of the floor and wall. Additional apparatus supplied manpower
and established supply lines. Patrons from the various restaurants and
establishments were evacuated during the incident and residents located in
apartments above Gia and Co. were displaced for a short period of time as well.
The Centre Region Fire Marshal's Office investigated the fire and determined the
cause to be accidental in nature.
Fires in the downtown shopping district are especially challenging to the
Alphas. Considering the factors of the historic buildings, heavy mid-day traffic
and difficult access points, any fire in that area could be catastrophic.
However, due to quick action by the Hotel staff and hard work by the crews on
scene the damage was contained to a small area and was minimal.
