Fire Police officer 585 arrived on scene and advised that there was smoke from the structure and the correct address of 588 Melissa Lane was relayed to all incoming units.
Engine 512, with crews still at the College Township Station after an earlier MVA went responding first and operated as the first in Engine.
Captain 594 arrived on scene at about 7:05 and found a split level single family home with 20 foot flames through the roof structure of the garage on the ‘D’ side of the hole and requested a second alarm.
Engine 512 arrived on scene and established a water supply from the hydrant at Melissa and Devonshire and stretched the first 1¾" hand line.
Engine 514 arrived a minute later and assisted 512’s crew with the first hand line and stretched a second 1¾" line to the front of the structure for fire control. Engine 514’s driver/operator stretched a 2½" attack line to the “B” side for exposure protection. All three lines were off of 512.
Tower 516 arrived and started ventilation and a primary search. Rescue 518, Engine 510 and 310 arrived on the scene and assisted with fire suppression, established a RIT team and staging area.
Shortly after 7:30 AM, crews were forced to do a tactical withdrawal of the garage prior to the light weight roof truss structure collapse. With flames consuming most of the garage roof, crews prepared for a possible defensive operation as the stability of the main structure was evaluated.
Once the main body of the home was deemed safe and a collapse zone was established along the semi-free standing “D” wall, crews re-entered and fought the fire from the unburned home and from the front driveway and the redeployed 2½" hand line in the back yard.
While crews worked to extinguish the fire, heavy smoke was seen from the eaves of the main portion of the home. Truck 516’s crew investigated and found that a small amount of fire had spread to the corner of the attic and filled the space with smoke. This fire was extinguished quickly and the space was vented of heat and smoke.
Captain A. Prestia (594) declared the fire under control just before 9:00 AM. Patton Township PD initiated the fire investigation while the Patton Township Road crew brought a back hoe and salt truck to the scene. After the initial investigation, the back hoe was positioned along the “C” side of the garage to pull down the damaged walls. This eliminated the collapse hazard and exposed remaining hot spots.
At 10:30, Captain 594 started releasing un-needed crews. Remaining crews working with the Township Road Crew continued extinguishing hot spots. The last crews, 512, 516, 518, 534 and 536 were on scene until 12:15 PM
