At 8:22 PM the Alpha Fire Co. was dispatched to the Residence Inn by Marriott, 1555 University Dr., in College Township for hazardous conditions with three patients passed out in the pool area.  Assistant Chief Prestia responded and immediately requested the Penn State Haz-Mat Team to respond to the scene for a possible chlorine leak.  Units arrived quickly and a unified command was established between fire, ems, police, and haz-mat.

Crews from Truck 517 and Rescue 518 entered the pool area in full protective gear with SCBA to investigate the problem.  Upon entering the pool area it was discovered that all people in the pool area were down and they received readings of 450 parts per million of carbon monoxide in the pool area.

Due to the possible severity of the incident mulitple ambulances were requested to the scene.

As the investigation was going on in the pool area the remaining crews from Truck and Rescue, along with the crew from Engine 513 performed evacuation of all the hotel rooms.  Occupants were asked to leave the building and could either wait outside or board a CATA bus, to stay cool, that was waiting for them in an adjacent parking lot.

Once all possible sources of the carbon monoxide were shut down in the pool area a crew from Engine 310 began the ventilation process whiile the crew from Engine 513 checked for carbon monoxide in the hallways  around the pool area.  No readings were found in the hallways and the pool area was dropping rapidly with ventilation started.

The source of the carbon monoxide leak was unknown, however, engineer's were enroute to evaluate the situation.  Occupants were allowed to return to their rooms around 10 PM, or if they chose were offered a room  at the Courtyard by Mariott across the street.

All units were placed available at 10:02 PM.
