While transferring to the Penn State Haz-Mat building for football
standby, the Alphas were paged out for a building fire on Bellaire
Avenue, just off of University Drive. Engine 512, Truck 516, and Rescue
518 responded immediately with mixed crews from all three stations.
During
the response, driver/operators navigated the fan-filled streets, and
police on scene provided a report of flames and smoke showing. Engine
512 was first to arrive on scene at the rear of the structure. Crews
found a smoke filled room on the second floor, with no immediately
evident fire. Truck 516's crew made entry to the third floor to conduct
a search while the engine crew entered the second floor through a
window to extinguish the fire.
The cause of the fire is still
under investigation at this time. There were no injuries, and apparatus
cleared the scene within 45 minutes to continue on the football game
standby.
After a disappointing loss to the Buckeyes, the standby
crews braved the heavy traffic for a return trip to the downtown
station. About 15 minutes into the ride, the Alphas with crews from
Pleasant Gap and Boalsburg were paged to respond to a motor vehicle
accident with entrapment on Waddle Road.
Rescue 516 went
responding with 6, followed by Truck 516 and Engine 512. Rescue 516
arrived on scene very quickly to find two involved vehicles- truck
versus car. The passenger vehicle had two occupants at the time of
arrival- the driver was boarded and removed through the undamaged
driver's side door.
The passenger side of the vehicle took much
of the impact, resulting in the need for crews to use hydraulic
spreaders and cutters to remove the patient.
Thanks to neighboring companies, Boalsburg and Pleasant Gap, for sending us some of your finest for helping to provide fire a rescue services to the area during this exciting evening.
