Specialized Rescue - Cow in manure pit |

EMS was dispatched to a farm at 3760 W. Whitehall Rd. to standby while the farmers went into a manure pit to get a cow out. The family grandmother noticed the cow fall into the pit while she was in the garden. The pit was half full of manure at the time the cow fell in.
EMS arrived on scene and realized that this was confined space and that there were no self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) for the farmers going into the space.

Alpha Fire Company was dispatched and advised of a cow in a manure pit. Chief DeArmitt arrived on scene and established Whitehall Rd. Command. Rescue 518 and Engine 510 responded with 518 arriving on scene at 18:13 hours. Assistance was provided by Fire Police and the Fire Chief.
With the assistance of the farmers a plan was formulated for the extrication of the 1200 pound cow. The farmers pumped out the pit that was eight feet deep till the manure was knee deep. Several attempts to hoist the cow up to and out of the opening proved that the slippery and exhausted cow would slip back into the pit. After using several carabiners and webbing arrangements to assure that the cow would not slip back into the pit when at the top the attempt worked and the cow, after some rest time, was washed down with fire hoses by the crew of Engine 510.
During the rescue the air quality was monitored and ventilation fans were used to keep a fresh supply of air flowing through the pit. County was advised of the extrication and recorded the Bovine Extrication Complete at 2008 hrs. Total staffing on scene was 12 firefighters, Apparatus on the scene included Engine 510, Rescue 518, Fire Police, Chief 500, and several Alpha Firefigthers in their private vehicle. EMS was provided by Centre LifeLink EMS, Co. 25.
