| The Alpha Fire Company was dispatched to 201 Vairo Blvd. for a Automatic Fire Alarm with no building number available. Company 5 was dispatched at 0744 hrs. with smoke on the third floor. With no building number given Engine 510 and Engine 514 arrived on scene to split up and take different routes through the complex. Engine 510 noticed smoke from Building J and upon investigation found an apartment on the third floor that had smoke originating from the bathroom. |

When the crew arrived at the source of the fire they found the sprinkler line above the bathroom fan had broken and the flow of water to the line was controlled at the sprinkler shut off valve. The fire was contained and extinguished by the broken line and the excess water was removed from the effected area. Centre Region Fire Marshall was called to investigate the fire. The fire was in a ceiling ventilation fan for the shower area and fire damage was to the fan unit and the bottom of the trusses and duct work above the unit in the attic space. The shower curtain had also melted from the heat of the fire and dropped into the shower stall. The piping for the sprinkler system was above the fire area and had actually melted and the water leak had put the fire out even though the sprinkler head had not activated because the heat from the fire was approximately four feet away. This fire is a good example that sprinkler systems do control fires and do save lives. The occupants heard the alarms sounding in the apartment and exited the apartment. Upon checking the smoke alarms it was noticed that several smoke detectors were removed from the wall of the four bedroom apartment and batteries were removed. The remaining smoke detectors were the ones that alerted the occupants of a fire. One of the detectors that was removed from the wall and the battery removed was next to the origin of the fire. Smoke detectors can not save lives if they are tampered with and not kept in good operation. The occupants were uninjured. A maintenance worker had turned on the shower and attempted to extinguish the fire was injured and transported to the hospital.
