As units were responding Capt. Bittner reported that police may have knockdown on the fire with dry chemical extinguishers. Engine 510 arrived on scene and began overhaul operations on the exterior of the building where the fire had occurred. Truck 517 arrived and its crew made access to the second division to check for extension to the attic area.
The fire caused extensive damage to the exterior of the building with minor extension to the walls of the second division.
The Centre Region Fire Marshal was on scene to investigate and is stating that the fire may have been caused by a lightning strike from a severe thunderstorm that moved through the area a short time before the fire started. The Fire Marshal's office and the Patton Township Police are continuing their investigation.
All occupants of the apartment building evacuated safely.
