Fire Police Captain Donald (570) arrived on scene first and advised that the person was actually inside the hopper and his arm was trapped between the side of truck and the crushing mechanism.
Given this information Assistant Chief Schreiner (503) asked for another rescue out of Company 8 (Pleasant Gap).
Engine 514 and Rescue 518 arrived on the scene simultaneously and performed a quick size-up of the situation. It was determined that the back of the truck would have to be opened to gain access to both sides of the crushing mechanism. After the trash was removed from the truck is was discovered that the person had sustained a degloving injury to his arm.
Crews from 514 and 518 used the newly acquired petrogen torch to start to cut a hole in the side of the truck. Penn State's welding crew also assisted with the cutting.
A hurst tool was placed inside the truck to try and pry the wall away from the crusher. Once enough room was made the arm was removed and the patient was taken to the awaiting helicopter, adjacent to the scene.
It is unknown, prior to the 911 call, how long the person was stuck in the truck, he was working alone. Extrication was completed in approximately 35-40 mins.
Special thanks to Jim Corl, Valley Trucking, and Penn State's welding crew for their expertise and help on scene during this call. Also, thanks to Engine 111 and it's crew for standing by at Station 5 during the call.
