The tasks assigned to the Engine Company are arguably the most important. Firefighters should have a strong knowledge of engine company duties in order to develop efficient operations on the fire ground. Engine companies have been the backbone of the fire service; their efforts have a direct bearing on the outcome of the incident. Engine company duties may consist of stretching a single line to extinguish a dumpster fire to supplying multiple hand lines and master streams. To perform these duties, the officer and firefighters in the engine must work as a team. Without teamwork from within the engine crew, the scene can turn to utter chaos. In general, the engine company operates as a team with a single mission: to control the fire. thumb_36495

There are two distinct areas of concern for an engine company.

1. Establishment of a sufficient water supply to meet the demands of the situation
2. The attack of the fire by the officer and crew.

Things to Remeber as an Engine Company Crew Member

Health and Safety - Know your Personal Protective Equipment

Accountability - Know what is expected of you from our Accountability OPP

Fitness - More than 100 firefighers die each year in the line of duty, 50% of which are due to cardiac arrest or other stress related complications. A regimented program including healthy food and physical fitness will help reduce your risk of becoming another avoidable loss.
