| A
well trained firefighter is a safe and prepared firefighter. As an
Alpha, members are required to attend a yearly minimum number of hours
toward training. Probationary members are introduced to the company and
its method of operations through mandatory attendance of the Engine
Pre-Emergency Response Training (PERT) program. In this program, they
learn the basic structure of the Alpha Fire Company, and of the Engine
Company. Fundamental skills learned in The Essentials of Firefighting
are re-examined to ensure smooth and safe evolutions on the fireground. |

Once
finished with the Engine PERT program, members can optionally move on
to learn about the Truck Company, and its mode of operations. The
Truck PERT again reenforces skills learned in state-level courses,
including search and rescue, ventilation, and salvage and overhaul.
Because the State College Area requires the additional protection a tower truck
provides, Alphas also learn proper operation of the aerial devices and
the benefits they afford fire rescue personnel. Operations as a
member of the Truck Company are more demanding and require a more
experienced firefighter. |
| The
Rescue PERT is the final stage of formal in-house training that is
provided to new members in order to familiarize them with the operation of
this particular fire company. A Rescue Company is generally comprised
of the most flexible and well-seasoned firefighters within the company.
They traditionally supply a level of specialized support to an
incident- including the rescue of a downed fellow firefighter,
high-angle and low-angle rescue, structural collapse rescue and
recovery, vehicle rescue, as well as general readiness for the
unknown-type incident. |
