Natural Gas Leak on Whitehall Road. PDF Print E-mail
Written by Carmine Prestia
Today, July 18, 2006 at 15:57 Alpha was tapped out to an outside gas leak at a construction site on West Whitehall Road in the Borough, near the YMCA.

Engine 510 arrived on scene and found a significant leak apparently caused by the construction activities on the site.  The crew staged about 100 yards from the leak and set up a 2 1/2 inch line to a Blitzfire nozzle on the ground in case the leak ignited.

Since Rescue 518 was out of service Boalsburg Fire Company's Rescue 318 responded along with the Fire Police and Chiefs Clouser and Triebold.  Chief Clouser assumed Incident Command (IC).  IC had Boalsburg personnel evacuate residents of nearby townhouses on Waupelani Drive to the North and use gas meters to measure the gas concentrations in those buildings.  Nothing was found as the prevailing winds were driving the natural gas away from the buildings to the south.

Columbia Gas responded to the scene and quickly located the line and pinched it off, stopping the leak.  Alpha units returned to Station 5 at 17:00.
