Borough Haz-Mat Scare PDF Print E-mail

At 15:00 hrs. the Alpha Fire Co. was dispatched to 237 S. Faser St., United States Post Office, for a hazardous materials incident.  Third Assistant Chief Prestia responed to the scene and was advised that a white powder was leaking from at least one of two large boxes that had no return address. The 911 center also advised that at least one person had come in contact with the substance.

As units arrived on scene the area was closed off to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic.  As officials from the Penn State Haz-Mat team performed recon they were able to aquire the address that the package was being shipped to and locate a contact.  As the investigation continued it was found to be student who was moving home and didn't want to throw away her sugar and flour.  Upon confirming that the package and substance were in fact sugar and flour all crews and haz-mat team members were able to stand down.

The box was placed available at 16:40 hrs.

No charges will be filed against the student.
