Monday 18 September is the Alpha Fire Company Safety Stand Down.
The formal portion of the Safety Stand Down will begin be from
1900-2100
Monday evening 18 September at the Main Station. Our focus this year is
on
Health and Safety. The number one killer of our fellow brothers in
the
Fire Service is still heart attack, heart disease and strokes. The goal
of
our program this year is to pause and think about our health and
wellness
in order to better perform our duties and protect ourselves and our
fellow
brothers. In keeping with the emphasis of the stand down, Monday
will
serve as a day set aside from the normal Monday training routine for us
to
reflect on Life Safety and our theme of operational preparedness though
a
focus on our being better prepared physically and mentally to operate
on
the Fire Ground. This year our stand down will kick off with a class
and
presentation by Lori A. Gravish, M.S. focusing on Heart attack and
disease
prevention though Health and Wellness. Ms Gravish is a member of the
teaching faculty within the Department of Kinesiology at Penn State
University and serves as a Wellness Coordinator for The Village at
Penn
State Lifecare Retirement Community. Ms. Gravish has also served as
a
Cardiac Rehabilitation Director for 6 1/2 years in 1997-2003. She
consults
with the Boston Firefighters Association is designing training programs
and
health & wellness screenings. She works on the national level for
the
American college of Sports Medicine writing certification exams. She
received her undergraduate degree from Penn State University and her
Master's degree from East Stroudsburg University in Cardiac
Rehabilitation.
Following Ms. Gravish’s presentation we will have a health screening
and
educational materials provided by Geisinger Health Systems
education.
The Safety Stand Down is an establish practice in the military that
has
recently been adopted by the Fire Service. The purpose of our Safety
Stand
Down is to raise the level of awareness toward fire fighter safety and
call
attention to the unacceptable number of LODD deaths and injuries. A
stand
down is a method used by the military to correct an issue that has
been
identified as a problem throughout its ranks.
All Alpha Fire Company Members are encouraged to attend.
