With temperatures hovering around 10 degrees early this morning, Company 5 was dispatched for an automatic fire alarm with water flow at 289 Northland Center. Duty Chief 541 responded and Engine 510 responded shortly after that. While in route, Ferguson Township Police arrived on scene and advised that smoke was showing from the roof of the structure above a restaurant at the address. 541 upgraded the box to a second alarm bringing out a full company response. 510 arrived and the crew forced entry at the rear of the building. Inside they found heavy smoke and a fire in a kitchen area with the sprinkler system active. The crew quickly doused the flames while Truck 517 went to work in front of the building in case roof access was needed. Engine 514 staged at the nearest hydrant and Truck 516 ran a ladder to the roof at the rear. 518 staged at the rear as well in case additional crews were needed. Centre Life Link EMS provided rehab in a warm ambulance for crews who were soaked by the sprinkler system or were standing outside in the bitterly cold air. The water from the operations caused air packs to freeze up and the parking lot to ice over; Ferguson Township Public Works was called in to spread salt so that crews could safely walk around the scene.
