On Friday, June 21st at 1200 hrs, Company 5 was alerted for a building fire at the Sackett Building on Penn State Campus. Units arrived on scene and were informed of a fire inside a chemical storage room. On follow up, County advised that the fire was knocked down by a student with a dry chemical extinguisher; however, the room was still filled with smoke. Crews entered the room and found multiple vials of chemicals as well as containers that were burned on top of a cart. There was also minimal extension to some items on the shelves above the cart. Crews then covered the top of the cart with dry chemical to ensure the fire was out. All of the firefighters who entered the chemical storage room were quarantined until the chemicals could be identified and it was deemed safe by Command that firefighters could return to service. Once the chemicals were identified as safe, ventilation was set up and a short time later the box was placed available.
