At 0600 this morning Company 5 was dispatched to the area of mile marker 69 of Interstate 99 for a large vehicle fire. Within minutes Engine 510, 512, 514, Tanker 520, Rescue 518, Command 5 and multiple fire police units responded on the run. Fire Director 5500 arrived on scene to the corrected address of the 3000 block of North Atherton Street with an approximately 8000 gallon tractor trailer hauling gasoline that rolled over and was fully engulfed. Engine 514 laid its entire hose bed securing the scene’s water supply. Multiple agencies were dispatched including Penn State Hazmat, PennDot, PSP and EMA. In a multiagency coordination effort, command decided, with the weather cooperating, to allow the gasoline to burn off. This minimized environmental pollution. Once the fire significantly decreased in size, crews extinguished what was left and were placed available.
